A bald eaglet named Sunny took flight from her nest for the first time, marking a major milestone for the popular live-streamed Big Bear Lake eagle family, according to Friends of Big Bear Valley.
Sunny, believed to be about three months old, is the older of two eaglets raised this season by adult bald eagles Jackie and Shadow. Her first flight occurred during “Fledge Watch,” a closely observed period when eaglets are expected to leave the nest.
Gizmo, Sunny’s younger sibling, remains in the nest overlooking Big Bear Lake. Observers and viewers of the livestream continue to watch for signs of her first flight.
Friends of Big Bear Valley, the nonprofit that manages the livestream, confirmed the fledging in a statement to LAist: “We have never had two eaglets get to this stage before, so we do not know when Gizmo will fledge or if this will encourage anything or not. She will go when she is ready. She did some catching up to Sunny yesterday by expanding her territory on the nest tree.”
Sunny did not fly far and was spotted in the nearby Roost Tree, described by the organization as one of Jackie and Shadow’s favorite perching spots.
The group shared earlier this week that Sunny is believed to be a female. In the days leading up to the flight, she had shown signs of readiness, including hovering and flapping.
The nonprofit added, “We expect to see her back at the nest at some point if past seasons are any indication, and Jackie and Shadow should be keeping a close eye out. We will keep watching both cameras to see what happens next.”
The nest has been streamed live by Friends of Big Bear Valley, attracting a large online audience following the progress of the eagle family.
