Rock band Green Day’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame was unveiled Thursday morning for a career that includes selling over 75 million records.
"Thank you to all of our fans that bought our records and come to our shows," frontman Billie Joe Armstrong told the crowd at the event. "We love you guys so much."
Rob Cavallo, who has produced several of Green Day’s records, and Ryan Reynolds, an actor, joined Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and Tré Cool at the ceremony at 6212 Hollywood Blvd. The ceremony came 12 days after the band headlined Coachella both weekends.
Green Day’s deluxe edition of “Saviors,” their most recent album, is set to be released on May 23. The deluxe will include seven additional songs. In celebration of their star, the trio is set to release the song “Ballyhoo” on May 2.
"We'll never say thank you enough for everybody and everyone who was involved with whatever we've done over the years," Dirnt said. "But this is for all of us, thank you."
Green Day’s star is the 2,810th one since the Walk of Fame opened in 1961 with the initial 1,558 stars.
The band was formed in 1986 in Berkeley and released its album "Dookie" in 1994, which reached second on the Billboard 200. It also included three No. 1 singles on Billboard's alternative songs chart. The album was selected for preservation in the United States National Recording Registry in 2024 by the Library of Congress.
Green Day was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015.
They won their first Grammy with “Dookie” for best alternative music performance. They won their next Grammy with “American Idiot” for best rock album in 2005. They won another Grammy in 2006 with "Boulevard of Broken Dreams” for record of the year, then in 2010 with "21st Century Breakdown” for best rock album.
"American Idiot" was also adapted into a Broadway musical. Green Day won Tonys in 2010 for best lighting design of a musical and best scenic design of a musical.
