Jeff Sperbeck, the business partner and former agent of former quarterback John Elway, died at 62-years-old Wednesday. He had reportedly been hospitalized after falling from a golf cart driven by Elway on the evening of April 26.

The Riverside County Coroner said in a press release Sperbeck had died at 1:10 a.m., and his family had been notified.

According to TMZ, Sperbeck was riding on the back of the golf cart when he fell, hitting his head on the asphalt. CAL FIRE officers transported him to a trauma center, but did not disclose his condition at the time.

The Riverside County Sheriff's Office has opened an investigation into the incident, but does not suspect Elway of wrongdoing.

Sperbeck began his career as an agent for football players in the late 1980s, with the firm Pro Asset Management. In 1994, he founded the agency Sullivan & Sperbeck, which represented dozens of athletes, including Elway, Ronnie Lott, and Jim Plunkett. In 2009, he started The Novo Agency, which represented the then-retired Elway, Lott and Plunkett, as well as a number of active players.

Sperbeck’s continued to manage Elway’s affairs into retirement, as the quarterback parlayed his on-field fame into a massive network of businesses and brand deals. The agent helped to run restaurants and car dealerships, among other enterprises.

In more recent years, Sperbeck and Elway co-founded a wine company named 7Cellars, which produces high-end vintages from the Napa Valley and Central Coast. The business uses Elway’s name heavily in its marketing, with one of its lines named “Elway’s Reserve.”

“I am absolutely devastated and heartbroken by the passing of my close friend, business partner and agent Jeff Sperbeck,” Elway told 9NEWS. “There are no words to truly express the profound sadness I feel with the sudden loss of someone who has meant so much to me. My heart and deepest sympathies go out to Jeff’s wife, Cori; his children Carly, Sam and Jackson; and everyone who knew and loved him. Jeff will be deeply missed for the loyalty, wisdom, friendship and love he brought into my life and the lives of so many others.”
