Mother’s Day may be perfect for a trip to the beach this year, but those who plan to hike should reconsider. The National Weather Service has put out an advisory for a “mini heat wave,” which is expected to hit Southwest California Friday through Sunday.
Dangerous conditions could occur in parts of Los Angeles, Ventura, and Santa Barbara Counties, as well as in the Central Valley.
Friday and Saturday temperatures are expected to be 10-20 degrees above normal, reaching highs between 88 and 98 degrees. Sunday should see the mercury rise to between 80 and 90 degrees.
The highest temperatures are projected in valley areas. Canoga Park and parts of the San Fernando Valley are expected to see 100 degree highs. Covina and Lancaster may reach 96 degrees.
The record high anticipated for Friday in downtown L.A. is 95 degrees. With temperatures projected to climb into the low 90s, that mark could be challenged this weekend.
Areas near the water may escape the worst of the hot spell. Redondo Beach should see a high below 80 degrees, and Oxnard and Santa Barbara are projected to have peak temperatures of 82 degrees.
Authorities say the event poses a high risk of heat illness for sensitive populations, including “the very young, the very old, those without A/C and those active outdoors.”
Residents are urged to use air conditioners, drink plenty of water, wear loose-fitting clothing, and never leave anyone alone in a closed car.
