Hailey Okula, a Los Angeles-based nurse who operated a popular Instagram account posting videos about life in her profession, has passed away, her husband Matt Okula announced Wednesday.

“It is with the heaviest of heart that I share the devastating news of the unexpected passing of my beautiful wife, Hailey Marie Okula, due to complications from childbirth,” Matt said in a post on Hailey’s page.

The couple’s child, Crew, was delivered successfully and is in good health.

In an interview with Fox 11, Matt reported that Hailey died of cardiac arrest following an amniotic fluid embolism, a rare post-birth emergency in which fluid from the womb enters the bloodstream.

Matt, a firefighter with the L.A. Fire Department, and Hailey married in 2022. After years of fertility struggles documented on Hailey’s page, the couple conceived their child using in-vitro fertilization.

Hailey continued to post Instagram content throughout the course of her pregnancy. Some of this was filmed before she became pregnant, while some documented her experience as an expectant mother in the nursing field.

Hailey rose to prominence through Instagram and her company RN New Grads, which offers assistance to early-career nurses. The endeavor’s page lists items available for purchase including cheat sheets on medical procedures, interview preparation flashcards, and study notes.

“Regarding Hailey’s business, RN New Grads, for now, we ask that no physical products be purchased as I don’t know all the logistical side of that part of the business yet,” Matt said in his Instagram post. “Digital products can continue to be purchased as normal.”

“Hailey refused to hire anyone to run her business, partly because we’re so cheap (lol), but more so because she was beyond passionate about her content. She was really particular, making sure she truly liked what was being posted and every resource she created,” Matt continued.
Supporters have set up a GoFundMe fundraiser for Matt and Crew. Proceeds are intended to pay for funeral expenses, as well as costs associated with childcare.
