Olympic diving events for the Los Angeles 2028 Games will be moved to the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center in Pasadena, a shift approved Wednesday by the L.A. City Council designed to save roughly $12 million in infrastructure costs and to increase revenue by using a venue with greater capacity.
The move replaces the earlier plan to stage diving at Exposition Park’s John C. Argue Swim Stadium adjacent to the Coliseum, which was rejected after the international aquatics federation, World Aquatics, raised “grave concerns” about the pool’s dimensions and safety features.
Mayor Karen Bass said in a statement, “This move will result in a significant step forward in ensuring both the financial success and sustainability of the Games, while enhancing operational efficiency.”
World Aquatics President Husain Al Musallam also voiced support: “World Aquatics fully supports the decision to stage Olympic Diving at the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center for the LA28 Games.”
The Rose Bowl Aquatics Center already has two Olympic-sized pools and meets required standards. Organizers say the switch not only avoids extensive reconstruction, but lets them leverage Rose Bowl capacity for higher ticket sales—helping revenue.
By contrast, the John C. Argue pool would have needed to be completely rebuilt to satisfy Olympic standards: it was judged insufficient in width and depth, among other safety and measurement issues.
Though diving is moving, LA28— the private nonprofit organizing committee for the Games — will still pay to widen the pool at Exposition Park so that it can continue hosting national and international competitions.
Los Angeles officials had also confirmed that the San Fernando Valley will host Olympic competitions during the 2028 Games—events that were blocked in 1984—via temporary venues in the Sepulveda Basin (Valley) Recreation Area. BMX, skateboarding, 3x3 basketball, and modern pentathlon are now slated for this location.
