Canadian rapper Tory Lanez has reportedly been rushed to the hospital after being stabbed by another inmate. The incident took place on the grounds of the California Correctional Institution at Tehachapi Monday, TMZ reported.
The outlet’s sources said the stabbing occurred in the prison’s yard, and that Lanez’s injury was not life-threatening. No motive was identified.
Lanez is serving the second year of a 10 year prison sentence for shooting rapper Megan Thee Stallion in 2020.
Megan testified in court that Lanez had shot at her feet as she walked away from the vehicle in which the pair had been riding. The incident took place following a party at the home of businessperson and social media personality Kylie Jenner.
In an Op-Ed published by the New York Times, Megan linked the attack to broader violence against Black women.
“I was recently the victim of an act of violence by a man,” she wrote. “After a party, I was shot twice as I walked away from him. We were not in a relationship. Truthfully, I was shocked that I ended up in that place.”
In 2022, Lanez was convicted of assault with a semiautomatic handgun, keeping an unregistered firearm in a vehicle, and gross negligence. He was sentenced in 2023, with the possibility of parole after six years.
Megan separately sought an order of protection against Lanez, which was extended last year until 2030.
Lanez’s stabbing comes just three days after he announced a new album, to be released this summer. The rapper said on Instagram the record had been “100% recorded, mixed & mastered."
The release will be Lanez’s second following his incarceration. “Peterson,” released in March, made use of generative artificial intelligence in order to overcome the limitations imposed by the prison environment.
An A.I.-generated mimicry of President Donald Trump’s voice on the album was interpreted by some as an appeal to the president for a pardon.
