SAN DIEGO, July, 2024 — California AG Rob Bonta revealed in July that 14 individuals were arrested in a sex trafficking bust during San Diego's Comic-Con.
From July 25-27, law enforcement went undercover at the convention for three days to apprehend criminals looking to exploit attendees. They also posted fake advertisements soliciting sex to apprehend buyers. Ten victims were rescued from a dangerous situation, including a 16-year-old minor.
Bonta pointed out that criminals often use large events like Comic-Con to exploit vulnerable people for profit. He said these arrests show potential offenders that this behavior won't be tolerated in San Diego.
Comic-Con officials, who host about 100,000 fans annually, said they were unaware of the operation but it was their understanding the arrests happened off-site. They mentioned they collaborate with law enforcement year-round to maintain event safety.
San Diego Sheriff Kelly Martinez made it clear that human trafficking is the most heinous crime and commended the work being done to catch those responsible.
San Diego Police Chief Wahl praised the capture of more than twelve criminals and the saving of numerous individuals.
HSI's Christopher Davis warned that anyone attempting to prey on minors at these events would face criminal charges.
The operation was a collaborative effort - local police, sheriff's office, and federal agencies all contributed.
