Remember Kelly Bensimon from the reality TV RHONY? She just dished on why she bailed on her wedding at the last minute. The reason? - Her man wouldn't sign a prenup and that was the last straw for Kelly.

Bensimon

, the

Real Housewives of New York City

, alum, 56, was going to tie the knot with Scott Litner, a financier. They'd been planning one wedding in Boston and another in the Hamptons before Bensimon

brought up the prenup.

"Ultimately, my decision is nobody's business, but I understand that there is speculation and gossip, and I want to put an end to all of it," Bensimon

said.

Bensimon

's dead set on keeping her money safe and ensuring her kids are cared for. For

Bensimon

, that prenup wasn't up for debate. There's no way she'd risk what she's worked for. "He thought that I would enter this union without legal protections in place, that I would leave everything to faith. But I've worked really, really, hard as a single mother and have always made smart decisions for myself and my family, and that will continue."

Bensimon

exclusively told People.

Bensimon

says she was upfront about wanting a prenup from day one and claims Litner was cool with the prenup idea at first. But as the big day approached, he started dragging his feet about signing. This flip-flop led to arguments and eventually tanked the wedding.

Bensimon

laid it out plain: "To be clear, he refused to sign a prenuptial agreement, and I refused to marry him. Full stop."

Guests and vendors were left scrambling after the last-minute cancellation. Bensimon

felt bad about the mess but didn't back down. She's convinced she made the right call for herself and her kids.

Bensimon

's not alone in wanting a prenup, especially for folks getting married later or with established careers. Lawyers often push for prenups to keep things clear if things go south.

Bensimon

's drama has people talking about money and marriage. She says love matters, but so does being smart about your finances.

Now, Bensimon

's throwing herself into work and family. She still sells houses and is grateful for her support during this rough patch.

Bensimon

hopes her story might help other couples avoid similar drama. She wants folks to talk openly about money before tying the knot.

Bensimon

's staying positive despite the wedding fiasco. It was rough calling off the engagement, but she's sticking by her decision to protect her assets and her daughters. Sometimes, you have to make tough calls now to avoid bigger headaches later.
