The supposed leader of a group calling itself the "Maniac Murder Cult" planned to poison children and minorities in New York City. Michail Chkhikvishvili,20 from the country of Georgia, was arrested in Moldova on July 6.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York said that Chkhikvishvili was leading up a dangerous worldwide group that specifically targets people because of their racial or ethnic background.

According to authorities, Chkhikvishvili utilized encrypted messaging platforms to incite individuals to engage in violent hate acts during a visit to his relatives in Brooklyn in 2022.

Authorities revealed that an undercover law enforcement officer posed as a potential recruit, contacting Chkhikvishvili through one of these platforms.

In November 2023, Chkhikvishvili reportedly asked the undercover officer to detonate explosives and set fires, targeting minorities and Jewish people. The authorities said he provided detailed instructions on making bombs.

During that same month, Chkhikvishvili devised a plan to attack NYC on New Year's Eve. He wanted to have someone dress as Santa Claus to distribute poison-laced candy to racial minorities and children at Jewish schools in Brooklyn. Officials reported that Chkhikvishvili guided the undercover agent in producing poisons based on ricin along with other toxic compounds.

A four-count indictment was brought against Chkhikvishvili by a federal grand jury in Brooklyn, accusing him of soliciting hate crimes and acts of mass violence in New York City.
