Diana Cojocari, who is Madalina Cojocari's mother, is being investigated as a suspect in the disappearance of the 11-year-old. The situation has reignited curiosity and increased the intensity of the search for the Cornelius, NC girl who is missing.
Madalina's mother, Diana Cojocari, is suspected for the first time since Madalina got off her school bus on Nov. 21, 2022. According to police, the parents took nearly three weeks to inform someone about Madalina's disappearance, eventually reporting her missing on Dec. 15, 2022. Their delay in speaking up landed both Diana and her husband, Christopher Palmiter, in trouble for not immediately reporting a missing child.
Diana was released from jail in May after serving nearly a year and a half for keeping quiet about Madalina's disappearance. Madalina's stepdad, Christopher, received 30 months of supervised probation for the same offense.
Police continue to emphasize that finding Madalina remains their top priority. Police are asking people to share Madalina's picture on social media and provide any information that might help solve the case.
Early in the missing child investigation, law enforcement expressed frustration with the parents' lack of cooperation. Captain Jennifer Thompson of the Cornelius Police Department stated, "This is a serious case of a child whose parents are clearly not telling us everything they know."
According to police reports, Diana claimed she last saw Madalina going to bed on Nov. 23, 2022. She told investigators she discovered Madalina missing the next day but waited until Palmiter returned from a trip to Michigan on Nov. 26 to discuss the child's whereabouts.
When questioned about the delay in reporting Madalina's absence, Diana reportedly told police she was concerned it might cause conflict with her husband. The couple allegedly discussed Madalina's absence over the following weeks but did not contact authorities.
Before Madalina vanished, her mom reportedly asked a family member to help her leave her husband, saying she wanted out of the marriage. Cornelius police are still searching for Madalina and would appreciate any help from the public.
