Violent bicycle gang leaves man with broken leg in LA robbery

A sudden assault by a mob of teens in downtown L.A. on Aug. 2 left a man with a broken leg and other injuries while also being robbed, police and the victim say.

KTLA reports that Shailoobek Bazarbai Uulu was waiting at a stoplight on Olympic and Hope when a gang of about 30 kids on bikes rolled up around his car. Uulu said when he attempted to pass the group after the light turned green, one of them threw a water bottle at his car.

"When I was passing, one of them threw a bottle of water in my car," Uulu recalled. "So, I don't know what happened."

Uulu claims he was ambushed by teens after pulling over and exiting his vehicle. Witness footage captures Uulu being assaulted as he limps barefoot, followed by the teens vandalizing his car and stealing his possessions, including his wallet and backpack. The attack left Uulu with a broken leg requiring surgery, as well as cuts and bruises from being stomped while on the ground.

Someone filming the incident mutters, "This is what L.A. has come to. Dog, I'm not even playing. I literally just parked. These kids are wild, not older than 20."

The victim maintains that he did not provoke the assault; however, the video reveals that one of the teenagers informs the individual filming that Uulu cut them off with his car, nearly striking them with his vehicle. 

The video depicts at least a few adults, including the man who recorded the incident, attempting to halt the assault and persuade the teens to vacate the area where traffic had been stopped as a consequence of the violent altercation.  

Uulu said a woman pulled him away from the attack. "Suddenly, someone pulled me out and she literally saved my life," he told KTLA. "It was a young lady, take me aside and hug me."

According to Uulu, he was planning to relocate, so most of his belongings were in the vehicle at the time of the incident. Documents, cash, and credit cards have gone missing. 

The teens fled before police arrived. Uulu was taken to a hospital for treatment. Uulu says the police haven't caught anyone yet, and the thieves even used his credit cards a few days later.

"It's been a week, and no one has been arrested," he said. "They stole my bank cards, and they even tried to use it a few days later." 

Uulu reported that his vehicle was badly damaged, necessitating an estimated $20,000 in repairs in addition to the lost property. 

"I am alone here and never thought that I could find myself in such a situation," he said.

In the aftermath of the attack, Uulu created a GoFundMe page where he shared photos documenting his injuries, providing visual evidence of the assault's severity. The LAPD continues to seek leads in the case as Uulu recovers from his ordeal.
