SANTIAGO (Reuters) -Walmart's workers union in Chile has called off a strike, it said on Monday evening, with its current labor agreement with the company extended another 18 months.

"This agreement is painful, but necessary after six days of strike," the National Federation of Walmart Workers said in a post on social media.

The union, which asked for inflation adjustments to wages as well as improved benefits, launched the strike last week after negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement had failed.

Local legislation allows union members to settle for a base contract and return to negotiations in 18 months.

Walmart Chile had warned last week that a total of 75 supermarkets would be closed by the strike, while 82 would operate partially.
