In Douglas, Georgia, a heart-wrenching accident occurred when a two-year-old accidentally shot himself in a Walmart parking lot. Nakyzi Odums was alone in the family car while his parents shopped for fireworks nearby. Local news outlet WALB reported that the incident happened in the afternoon on July 3.

According to local authorities, the toddler's parents were just feet away when they heard the fatal gunshot. They rushed back to their vehicle to find Nakyzi had suffered a chest wound. He was rushed to a Douglas hospital and later moved to Jacksonville but died Saturday.

Witnesses reported that the toddler was in the front seat, and they believe the gun may have been stored in the side of the car door. Pruette underscored the importance of gun safety, particularly around children. He stressed the need to keep guns out of children's hands, even if it's legal to have them in the car.

As the investigation continues, it remains unclear whether Nakyzi's parents, identified by family members as Sam Odums and Laileighauna Parks, will face any charges related to the incident. There are no arrests yet - cops are still gathering info on what happened.

The community has rallied around the family, offering support and condolences. Nakyzi's grandmother, Candi, has established a fundraiser to cover funeral expenses and provide financial assistance to the grieving family.

Candi described Nakyzi as a joyful child, full of smiles, laughter, and love. This tragic incident has resonated deeply with parents across the community, serving as a stark reminder of the importance of gun safety.

The accident has reignited discussions about firearms safety, particularly concerning children's access to weapons. Safety experts emphasize the critical need to store firearms securely, keeping them locked away with ammunition stored separately and out of children's reach.

The incident has also sparked debate about gun owners' responsibilities and the potential need for stricter regulations. Some advocate for mandatory gun safety classes for owners, while others propose implementing advanced locking technologies on firearms.

As the community mourns Nakyzi's loss, local leaders are urging gun owners to exercise greater caution. In response to the tragedy, law enforcement agencies are distributing free gun locks to residents in an effort to promote safer firearm storage practices and prevent similar incidents in the future.
